The Memorial of the Unknown Soldier is located in Nasr City and it was made in the wake of October War in 1973 to memorize the sacrifices of the brave Egyptian soldiers. In the first anniversary of October War, late President Sadat issued directives to make a memorial to the martyrs of the war and to memorize the Unknown Soldier. An artistic competition was held for the purpose in which artist Sami Rafi, a professor in the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo who obtained his PhD from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Vienna, won the best design.
The memorial was made on 25/5/1975 and finished on 15/9/1975; it is four walls intersected at the peak in a pyramidal shape, referring to Egypt's Pyramids, the symbol of eternity. The height of the wall is 31, 6 meters and its thickness is 1, 9 meter and the width hit 14, 3 meters at the base.
Written on the memorial are the common names used by the Egyptians such as Mohamed, Adel, Gerges, Amer, Taher, Makram, Zaki, el-Qenawi, Abdellah, Abdel Samad, Ibrahim etc.
On October 6, 1975, President Sadat and then vice-president Hosni Mubarak opened the memorial and laid wreaths at the Unknown Soldier Memorial.
In 1981, the funeral of late President Sadat was mourned and he was buried in the same location where his sepulcher is next to that of the Unknown Soldier. Egypt's guests and visitors are keen to visit this memorial and lay wreaths at the Unknown Soldier Memorial and Sadat's sepulcher as well.
