Coptic Cairo is only its modern name. "Coptic" is the name for the Christian's who reside almost solely in this area of town. To most, this is also known as Old Cairo. Islamic Cairo is home of the very oldest section of Cairo. It's near to Islamic Cairo in vicinity, but it has an entirely different atmosphere and sites. Inside its walled exterior, nestled within the 1st century AD Roman fortress of Babylon, is still standing as a barrier for intruders. The wall lined streets do, even more than those of Islamic Cairo, resemble an inescapable labyrinth. The compound and serene, so much so that many visitors tend to speak in soft whispers without knowing why. The main entrance first leads you to the petite Coptic Museum with tells of Coptic Cairo's history and the significance of the region's main attraction: the Hanging Church. Resting between two round Roman towers, against which the waters of the Nile once lapped before the river shifted westward centuries ago. Also within Coptic Cairo's walls are old monasteries, churches, and the famous synagogue Ben Ezra.
